Tom Petty Refuses To Let Michele Bachmann Use His Music
– Tom Petty has asked Michele Bachmann to stop playing his songs during her campaign appearances.
The Republican presidential hopeful from Minnesota played Petty’s “American Girl” at a rally launching her presidential campaign on Monday, after which she was sent a cease and desist letter by Petty’s management team. The song had been previously approved for use by Hillary Clinton during her 2008 presidential campaign.
In 2008, Petty sent a cease and desist letter to Republican candidate George W. Bush when he discovered that the Bush campaign was using his song “I Won’t Back Down” at rallies.
The letter told the then-presidential hopeful: “This use has not been approved. Any use made by you or your campaign creates, either intentionally or unintentionally, the impression that you and your campaign have been endorsed by Tom Petty, which is not true.”
