LMFAO: The Science Of Party Rocking
The No. 1 song in America right now is “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO. It’s also hit No. 1 in Denmark, New Zealand, Mexico, Ireland, Sweden, Australia, Germany, the U.K., Brazil … you get the idea. The duo behind LMFAO — the aforementioned party rockers — are Stefan and Skyler Gordy. Respectively, they’re the son and grandson of the legendary Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records. (For the record, the two are uncle and nephew, not father and son.)
Stefan is better known as DJ Redfoo, while Skyler performs as DJ Sky Blu. Speaking with Guy Raz, host of weekends on All Things Considered, Stefan says that reaching the top of the Billboard chart was always part of their plan.
“Our goal was, ‘We gotta get to No. 1,’” Stefan says. “So when we were mixing this song, we spent about two weeks. And it was, ‘What’s gonna capture the world? What’s gonna be a little different?’ But I still feel slightly surprised.”
LMFAO is Internet slang for “laughing my (bleeping) ass off.” Stefan confesses that the duo was originally called Sexy Dudes. When their friends reacted negatively to the name, the two turned to a higher authority for advice: Skyler’s grandmother.
“We were on instant messenger,” Stefan says, “and we asked her, ‘What do you think of our new name, Sexy Dudes?’ And she simply replied, ‘LMFAO. Are you serious?’”
The rest, he says, is history.
