Record Store Day Round Up: Spinner’s Best Bets for April 16
C Flanigan, Getty Images A Guided by Voices tribute album called ‘Sing for Your Meat’ leads off the goodies on April 16. The album features Flaming Lips covering ‘Smothered in Hugs,’ Elf Power doing ‘Man Called Aerodynamics,’ Lou Barlow covering ‘Game of Pricks,’ with Kelley Deal and Buffalo Killers playing ‘Scalding Creek.’ In addition to the 17-track album, a five-song bonus digital EP will also be available.
Kill Rock Stars will release 2,000 limited edition LPs of the label’s 1991 compilation featuring Nirvana, the Melvins, Bikini Kill and Brat Mobile.
Mute is releasing a special album called ‘Vorwarts’ which is a compilation of exclusive tracks from their roster and will feature unreleased material by the Liars, Junip and Nick Cave collaborator Mick Harvey, among others. Covers Tim Mosenfelder, Getty Images Foo Fighters will issue a vinyl-only album called ‘Medium Rare,’ which features them covering songs by greats like the Ramones, Cream and Pink Floyd.
Franz Ferdinand will release an EP featuring cover versions of songs from their album ‘Tonight,’ contributors include Debbie Harry, Magnetic Fields, Peaches and the now defunct LCD Soundsystem, among others.
Clinic are offering up the intriguing ‘Ladies Night’ EP, featuring covers of songs by Cilla Black, Man Parrish and the Seeds and Audrey Hepburn.
Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu are releasing a split seven-inch with Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart singing to Deerhoof’s ‘Almost Everyone, Almost Always’ while Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier tackles a number from Xiu Xiu’s release ‘Dear God, I Hate Myself.’
The Decemberists are issuing the ‘Live At Bull Moose’ EP, which includes a cover of the Louvin Brothers’ ‘If I Could Only Win Your Love.’ One-Offs AFP | Getty Images Michael Jackson is getting in on things posthumously with ‘Hollywood Tonight/Behind the Mask,’ a seven-inch which features previously unreleased remixes of both tracks.
Nirvana’s prized limited-edition ‘Hormoaning’ EP will be back on the shelves again — but not for long as only 6,000 copies are available.
Radiohead are reportedly releasing two new songs (‘Supercollider’ and ‘The Butcher’) as a vinyl single.
The Flaming Lips are issuing a vinyl five-disc box set dubbed ‘Heady Nuggs: The First 5 Warner Bros. Records 1992-2002.’
Queen will issue a limited seven-inch version of their forthcoming single ‘Stormtroopers in Stilettos.’ The release features a remastered take of ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ and a previously unreleased version of ‘Keep Yourself Alive’ that was recorded in 1975.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are issuing a 10-inch vinyl single with ‘Gotta Get That Feeling’ and ‘Racing in the Street (’78),’ both culled from a ‘Songs From the Promise’ concert the band staged last year in Asbury Park.
The Rolling Stones are offering up the ‘Brown Sugar’ seven-inch, which includes an extra track from the ‘Sticky Fingers’ session, included only once before on a rare hits package from the band.
