Concert Picks: The So So Glos, Jessica 6, Dream Diary…

Long live the three-day weekend two days to live it up, with one day to recover. Sure, while thats just one aspect of the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, wed like to remind you that its more about  independence than barbecues and bikinis. Still, no matter how you choose to celebrate this weekend (and you had better), we hope fireworks are in the mix. While we personally cant promise them to you, weve got plenty of resounding, glittering, reverberating sounds that will likely leave moods just as aglow. Check out our picks for the weekend below:

  • The So So Glos | Friday, July 1 | 8:00 pm | Free | 21+ | The Suffolk, New York, NY Map | We appreciate the pseudo-180 factor that the Brooklyn-based band has decided to spin upon us in one way, with song titles such as Lindy Hop and Fred Astaire against an alternative, indie, punk backdrop. In another way, a sense of varied style within said alternative, indie, punk format that ranges rather effortlessly. Theyll be playing a few choice shows this summer; check out their official MySpace for more info. With Night Manager, Mainland, A. Fox for more information, call (212) 982-5008.
  • Jessica 6 | Friday, July 1 | 8:30 pm | $10 | 18+ | The Echo, Los Angeles, CA Map | Taking the groove from the seventies, coupling it with the glitter of the eighties and the hip quality of the nineties usually done within the confines of one layered track seems to be the Brooklyn-based trios regular method of operation. Its a very experimental take that has hints of improvisation, but comes out smooth and polished and, of course, worthy of much dancing to. With Love Grenades, Vice Cooler Buy Tickets
  • Dream Diary | Saturday, July 2 | 8:00 pm | $7 | Death By Audio, Brooklyn, NY Map | Its no secret that the eighties are alive and well in the new millennium, and Dream Diary is one of the many to breathe sufficient life into the era. Theirs is a very sweet, ethereal rock with flowing melodies and complementing harmonies. All the sweetness of complex orchestrations without the stickiness of gum to ones shoe something we will always appreciate in a band and overall execution of style. With Bad Indians, Haunted Leather, Dutch Treat.
  • Fucked Up | Saturday, July 2 | 8:00 pm | $15 | Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL Map | Dont let the name fool you; the Ontario-based band is anything but. Taking the first song we can think of off the top of our heads though, The Year of the Pig: with such lyrics as Suck from the bones, leave the corpse on the floor, you might disagree. But the execution of the song ethereal and unassuming, mellow and driven by sweet feminine vocals, then enhanced by screaming male vocals, if you could call it that Okay, its a little fucked up. But its the kind of fucked up only a music lover would, well, love. Three cheers; with JEFF The Brotherhood Buy Tickets
  • Catwalk | Sunday, July 3 | 9:00 pm | $5 | The Smell, Los Angeles, CA Map | The borderline surf music sounds of the Ventura County-based alternative indie band are all too perfect for the summer season. If we were to close our eyes, we can almost smell the salty sea air in well, Ventura County.Bonfires and fireworks, anyone?  With Sea Lions, Sweater Girls tickets available at the door.

Those are our picks and were sticking to em. Whos on your To See List this weekend?
