Concert Picks: Lily Parlour & The Tricks, Puro Instinct, Mia Doi Todd…

And another one bites the dust sayonara, Monday through Friday; hello, weekend. This particular recently passing solstice allows for longer days and warmer nights, and therefore more opportunities to get our ever-loving groove on. From the singer/songwriter set to an elaborate fusing together of genres, weve got it covered for you this weekend. Take a gander, and have a great weekend

  • Lily &  The Parlour Tricks | Friday, June 24 | 9:00 pm | 21+ | $5 | The Gutter, Brooklyn, NY Map | The New York-based band is a mix- and smash-up of so many musical genres and sub-genres. From Doo-wop to alternative rock  to Motown and back, there is no one sound that defines or restricts them, and like any respectful band, their lyrics carry as much weight as any ambient quality contained within  individual track compositions. With JP and The Gilberts, The Musicianers, Joey Figgiani for more information, call (718) 387-3585.
  • Minibosses | Friday, June 25 | 9:00 pm | $5 | The Smell, Los Angeles, CA Map | Minibosses where gaming meets alternative, progressive rock. Currently based in Phoenix, Arizona, the largely instrumental band specializes in video game music covers and anything in general relation to it (case in point, they play a mean Castlevania). If theres anything weve learned about video games as of late, its the Hollywood producer-like touch that makes them feel and look ultra-fantastic. And as Minibosses have taken care to show us, so does the soundtrack. With Wet Mango, Wizwars, Kool Skull tickets available at the door.
  • The Sights | Saturday, June 25 | 7:30 pm | 21+ | $10 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY Map | Pure rock and roll meets a hardcore brassy horn section by way of Detroit-based heavyweights The Sights. As of late theyve been applying their talents to tracks of the short and sweet, punch in the gut, dance your heart out variety, most of them coming from their most recent full-length album, Most of What Follows is True. With Des Roar Buy Tickets
  • Puro Instinct | Saturday, June 25 | 10:00 pm | 21+ | $10 | Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL Map | Siblings are our favorites when it comes to music (or at least theyre way up there), especially when theyre talented and come with a discernible edge that makes them pop. Needless to say, sisters Piper and Skylar Kaplan, formerly known as Pearl Harbor, are no exception. Their latest album, Headbangers in Ecstasy, is inducing of that much (read the album title again). A few tracks in and its an almost involuntary response and to that, we say well done.  With John Maus, Geneva Jacuzzi Buy Tickets
  • Mia Doi Todd | Sunday, June 26 | 6:00 pm | Free | Amoeba Music, Hollywood, CA Map | Amoebas walls have housed and showcased numerous talent on any and every edge of the music spectrum via in-store performances, and now they welcome singer/songwriter Mia Doi Todd, who is as varied as her musical collaborators. Her voice, rich and layered, matches the ever flowing and story-telling aspect of her her guitar style. She is currently on her ninth album, titled Cosmic Ocean Ship, so have a Sharpie ready and the CD jacket opened. For more information, call (323) 245-6400.

Those are our picks and were sticking to em. Whos on your To See List this weekend?

The other night I had a dream that we were at the Omaha Zoo and there was a HUGE, huge moth about the size of Bebe that kept sucking on m y elbow it was weird. Anyway. Happy Friday.
