Swope achieves coveted accreditation

TERRE HAUTE — Long an anchor of the Wabash Valley cultural scene, Swope Art Museum has once again achieved national recognition.

Officials announced Thursday afternoon that, for the fourth consecutive time since 1972, the Swope Art Museum has earned accreditation from the American Association of Museums. The AAM is the nation’s 106-year-old authority on museum excellence, and of America’s 17,500 institutions, it has accredited fewer than 800.

Executive director Marianne Richter remarked that the Swope is one of only 18 accredited museums in Indiana.

“Only 4.5 percent of the American museums have achieved accreditation and less than one-quarter of AAM-accredited museums have a track record of four,” she said. “The proc

Nick Cannon hospitalized

Mariah Carey has defied doctors’ orders to stay by her husband Nick Cannon’s bedside following his hospitalization for mild kidney failure.

The host was admitted to a medical facility in Aspen, Colorado, where the couple is holidaying with their baby twins, and Carey revealed Cannon’s plight in a brief message on Twitter.

She’s now opened up about her partner’s health scare, revealing it’s a “serious moment that’s very tough” on their family.

In a post on her website, alongside a picture of the couple in a hospital bed, she writes, “This is us in the hospital – role reversal; Last year it was me attached to the machines (after having…

What do you know about the Canary Wharf district?

Since recently Canary Wharf has become an important feature of the London’s skyline, a tourist destination, famous for canary wharf restaurants. With the One Canada Square, it shapes the view over London, but this local peculiarity has a relatively short timeline. It has become one of London two financial districts, the home of banking institutions and law firms related to high quality offices and business premises, but until the early 80′s it had his roots in maritime history.

Canary Wharf was the site of the old docks of the West Indies, important for shipments to London. When the dock slowly began to decline, the reconstruction of the site began in 1988. O Read more…

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo: What To Expect

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is set to hit theaters on Dec. 21st and if you haven’t read the book, you are really missing out.  Steig Larsson’s Millennium trilogy is one of the best international mystery/thriller series ever published.  The first novel is an epic that can stand alone, and it’s not necessary that you read the whole series.  Also, it makes use of some really cool computer gear.  Today, I am going to take the high-road, however, and try to not be a book snob.  It is my expectation that you will be able to enjoy this movie without regret of having missed out on the novel.

Cast

Daniel Craig

Yes, I know that all the books are supposed to be about Lisbeth Salander and the miserable existence that she has been forced to lead at the hands of a secret organization, but it’s really about Mikael Blomkvist.  His altruistic personally and his complete intolerance for injustice is central to the story.  Daniel Craig fits the bill for me as a believable Blomkvist, right down to his natural demeanor, not to mention his parallel looks to Sweden’s Michael Nyquist.

‘The Shrinking Man’ – Richard Matheson (Gollancz)

Is it just me or does time seem to flow more and more quickly as the end of the year draws ever closer? This is my way of saying that not only do I still need to write my Smugglivus post (its coming, honest!) but I still havent started on The Heroes. Its also my way of saying that it was only four weeks ago that I watched The Incredible Shrinking Man but it feels like a lot longer… You can read what I wrote over Here but the gist of it goes a little something like this, The film was so good, in fact, that I went out and bought the book not long afterwards. Check it out, seriously… So, not only a film that I watched the hell out of but a film that prompted me to visit Amazon New & Used the following day and pick up the book. Read more…
